With 69th Independence day just around the corner, we are recalling Bollywood’s contribution to Desh-Bhakti. Bollywood has given some solid patriotic hits that gave us goosebumps. Movies like Border and Sarfarosh brought tears in our eyes and made us respect the people who sacrificed their lives to protect ours even more.
(1953)
Rani Laxmi Bai will still be remembered with pride long after we are gone. This movie released in 1953 is her biopic. She was not only a queen but also a brave warrior who led the first mutiny against the British army in 1857 demanding for purna swaraj.
Phir Subah Hogi (1958)
The years after independence were very crucial years. This movie depicts the struggle of a common man during that time in the best way possible. And even after all these years if you watch this movie today you will still be able to understand and probably relate to some of its parts.
Haqeeqat (1964)
Hats off to Chetan Anand for this brilliant masterpiece which is the best and only depiction of the war that India fought as a free country with china after independence. Patriotic songs like Ab tumahre hawale Watan sathiyon and sir Himalaya ka humne naa jhukne Diya remind us what this nation and its people have done for us.
Shaheed (1965)
One of the most important films in the history of Indian patriotic cinema. The movie received the presidential award. It touched many hearts with its an outstanding screenplay and overwhelming story. Bhagat Singh’s mother was immensely moved by the movie as she blessed the makers of this movie.
Upkar (1967)
Manoj Kumar was influenced by Lal Bahadur Shastri to makes this movie as he saw his work and appreciated him for his previous movie Shaheed. This movie was the biggest blockbuster hit of the year 1967.
Farz (1967)
Farz is Bollywood’s first patriotic spy movie majorly inspired by James bond movies. it was a remake of a Telegu movie Gudachari 116. The movie was a blockbuster hit and had 2 sequel keemat and raksh. It was the beginning of this genre in Bollywood.
Purab Aur Paschim (1971)
This movie highlights the difference between western and eastern countries and their culture. And shows how one’s nationality should be something to be proud of rather than being ashamed. They were hit at the box office.
Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974)
Manoj Kumar has given Bollywood quite a lot of patriotic movies. And they have been loved by the public immensely. This movie revolved around the three-basic necessity- food, clothes, and shelter. The musical blockbuster set a trend in Bollywood.
Prahaar (1991)
The film even thought wasn’t hit at the box office, it is still one the boldest movie based on evils of the Indian independent society. The film captures the anti-social and evil powers that prevent the nation from progressing.
Border (1997)
The film was a dramatic depiction of longewala battle that India fought against Pakistan in the year 1971. This movie was released in the year 1977 and it became the highest-grossing independence movie the year.
Sarfarosh (1999)
Amir khan has been known to give us some of the best movies that Bollywood has ever made. Sarforsh is one such movie and it took seven years in pre-production of one of the greatest patriotic movies to ever hit Indian cinemas. The film was released when India was struggling with the Kargil war with Pakistan.
Veer Sarkar (2001)
This film was only released in Maharashtra and it proved to be a great hit. This was the first movie in Bollywood that was funded by the public. The film documents and captures critical ideologies about a nation that we need which should not be about caste and religion.
Gadar- Ek prem Katha (2001)
This is one of the most heart-touching patriotic movies. The movie captured the relation between India and Pakistan and showed how partition affected both countries. It was a super-duper hit movie and remains an all-time favorite to date.
Lagan (2001)
Another one of Amir Khan’s movie that still gives goosebumps to people if the watch it today. The movie sets place in the 19th century when India was struggling for independence and the villagers were struggling with the taxes. The most famous dialogue from the movie remains – “Dogna lagan Dena Hoga”

The movie shows how some very brave people protected other citizens of India with the help of technology. the villain of the movie a Pakistani humiliated by the defeat of December 16, 1971, wishes to take revenge. The movie was a hit at b.o.
Manikarnika: The queen of Jhansi (2019)
Another biopic made on the life of Rani Laxmi Bai who fought in the very first revolt against the British Army was absolutely loved by the public. The film was a super hit at the box office and was able to cross 100+ crore.
Swadesh (2004)
The film even though was a flop at b.o. the message given by it was quite admired by the public. The film documents how Indians should give up their greed for money and return back to their motherland.
Chak De India (2007)
The film is about an Indian Muslim hockey player who was disgraced for match-fixing. The movie captures the redemption of the coach’s respect and honor. He coaches a women’s hockey team and takes it to the world cup.
A Wednesday (2008)
The film was a super-hit. The story is about a man in today’s world troubled and involved with terrorism and how he tackles the enemy without relying on the government and police.’
D- Day (2013)
The amazing movie was a flop probably because of the poor release timings. The movie tells a beautiful tale about patriotic people going to Pakistan to kill the enemies. Terrorism is at its highest peak in the movie and its storyline was quite extraordinary.
